Home Theater, DVI Cable Information and Help

November 10th, 2009

So What is DVI? DVI Stands for Digital Visual Interface. DVI is the digital interface standard created by the DDWG (Digital Display Working Group). Led by Compaq, Fujitsu, Silicon Image, Hewlette Packard, NEC, Intel and IBM, the DDWG’s main objective is to “address the industry’s requirements for a digital connectivity specification for high-performance PCs and digital displays.”

With the need to accommodate both digital and analog monitors, this new digital interface standard was created to convert analog signals into digital signals. DVI’s High bandwidth capabilities make it ideal for HDTV connections. Also available in dual link, DVI can reach higher resolutions still.

Using the pictures on the right, you can determine the type of connection you need, be it DVI-D, or DVI-I. To determine the actual signal being used you will have to consult your manual for the device being connected. For more information concerning DVI:

DVI-D Digital. Connectors on DVI-D do not have the 4 additional pins, these are meant for carrying Digital signals only. Digital must be connected to Digital and Analog to Analog. While you can plug a DVI-D cable into a DVI-I socket, both devices you are connecting must support Digital signal format. Analog to Digital will not work.

DVI-I Analog or Digital. Connectors are basically the same as DVI-D with the exception of 4 added pins. You’ll notice both have 3 rows of pins to the left, and one horizontal pin to the right. The DVI-I connection has 4 additional pins, 2 on top and 2 on bottom. These pins are used to carry the needed signals for RGBHV analog video. (Red, Green, Blue and Horizontal). You can use DVI-I on both DVI-D and Analog connections, but remember, an analog device will not be compatible with a Digital device. For more pictures of these items visit:

Adapters HD15 to DVI-I (VGA to analog) adapters exist to connect your analog device to a analog display through DVI connection.

Remember that while DVI-I is usable for Digital display, the extra 4 pins make it usable for Analog as well. The needed adapters is available in our store.

Maclaren Pushchairs Combine Fashion, Comfort and Affordability

September 13th, 2009

Maclaren Pushchairs were the first pushchairs to be made out of lightweight materials and the first to be collapsible to the size of an umbrella. These were invented by Owen Maclaren in 1965, and the company now produces a wide range of pushchairs suited to a variety of uses.

These are typically ‘umbrella’ pushchairs - highly collapsible strollers that are at the same time lightweight and hassle-free. There are a number of reasons to opt for a Maclaren pushchair.

These pushchairs are compact, easy to travel with, and their frames can be folded in to take up a minimal amount of space. The original design was to make them collapsible to the size of an umbrella. They are lightweight and hardly cause any strain on the pusher, and thus ensure that you have a comfortable walk with your baby in one of them. Their frames are made out of aluminium and other durable materials that can withstand the rigours of travelling over rough surfaces.

Maclaren pushchairs are adjustable and come with a variety of accessories and add-ons for your convenience. You can rely upon their designs to give priority to your baby’s safety and comfort. Moreover, they are very trendy, and many celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham, favour them for their sturdiness and style.

Despite their high fashion quotient, Maclaren pushchairs are durable and convenient. Moreover, the many benefits of these strollers are not accompanied with a high price tag, and you would not have to stretch your budget to buy one.

DVD Rental Stores

March 9th, 2009

Isn’t renting a DVD and wathing it at home a better option than driving to a movie theater and spending a lot of money on a movie that you really didn’t want to see? Certainly, there is nothing like the silver screen for the big blockbuster hits, or the expansive cinematography of some of the art flicks. But if you don’t mind a small screen - or if you have a veritable home theater in your home - DVD rental stores can be your savior for movie night.

DVD rental stores have all kinds of movies from classics to the very latest releases, comedy, drama — you name it. All you have to have is enough time to browse up and down the neatly categorized aisles of the video store and select the movie(s) of your choice. Stores can look up movies on online lists and confirm availability of a particular movie.

Customers can usually keep rented movies for a week to ten days depending on the store’s policies. This allows for watching the movie at one’s own leisure.

DVD rental stores have varied hours, but it is important to drop off your DVDs before the store closes to avoid late charges. Most stores have outside slots, so a customer can just drop the DVDs into the drop box and not enter the store. DVD’s can usually be reserved by calling the store and will be held for a certain amount of time. DVD stores make it a point to have enough copies of the latest movies to keep customer’s happy, although some of the more popular movies should always be reserved.

Many stores sell DVDs at a substantial savings. Buying is a good alternative to renting if you wish to watch the movie a number of times.

Should You Subscribe To Satellite Or Cable TV Service?

January 1st, 2009

It used to be that watching TV was a no brainer - you had 7 or 8 channels to choose from and that was it. But in todays high tech world, not only are there hundreds of channels, you also have to choose which type of TV service you want.

We are bombarded with advertisements on Cable TV, and Satellite TV each trying to get us to switch from one to the other, but how do you know which one is right for you? Granted, both have advantages and disadvantages and you need to make that decision based on your lifestyle.

If you choose cable TV such as that which Comcast provides you will get many convenient features. One that I particularly like is the “On Demand” feature. This option allows you to pick from dozens of movies, news programs and sporting events and you can elect to watch them at any time that is convenient to you. An added benefit is that you can pause, fast forward, and rewind while you are watching.

With cable TV you will get hundreds of channels - this differs depending on the service you choose and the area you live in so you will have to check with your cable provider for details. Among the channels are premium services like HBO Showtime, Starz!, The Movie Channel, Cinemax and premium sports channels. These channels provide you with recent movies and sporting events and have an additional cost above the base price.

These days, cable TV is not only about TV, Comcast also offers commercial free music which can be pumped through your stereo. Additionally, you can get great informative channels like The Golf Channel, Biography, E!, and National Geographic. In the on demand section you will also find many exercise videos including yoga, belly dancing, cardio, and stretching.

Satellite TV, on the other had also has a wide range of channels - over 100 at least. Included in that are many premium movie channels. They also have a pay per view option of over 60 movies (again, check with your provider on this for exact number). If you like the music option of Comcast, Directtv has 36 commercial free radio channels. Your satellite dish will also pick up local channels if you are near a major US city and digital sound is included.

If sports is your main reason for watching the tube, then you may find that you want to go with satellite as your television service. Directv has exclusive packages with much of the sporting industries including NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA.

As you can see, one television service is not better than the other. Whether you choose satellite or cable simply depends in what you like to watch and what services you need for your television viewing.

Lee Dobbins writes for a2z-satellite where you can find more about satellite television as well as other satellite services.

Creativity and Innovation Management - Good Ideas Part 1

December 31st, 2008

The constant search for Good Ideas has resulted in many techniques for generating them. Part 1 of Good Ideas will briefly discuss Franklin’s (2003) research into the types of ideas that are most likely to succeed.

The research investigated the types of ideas that had been most successful in the past. Six types were defined:

a) Need spotting - where individuals would actively look for a need and attempt to resolve it.

b) Solution spotting - where a technique was already known and the individual went out searching for a problem to apply it to (e.g. laser technology was applied to music, resulting in CD’s and DVD’s).

c) Market research - ideas generated as a result of needs establishing through market research.

d) Random event - moments of serendipity when people stumble across answers they weren’t looking for.

e) Mental invention - pure random ideas with no previous knowledge of how they may be implemented. An approximate example is Einstein’s E=mc squared.

f) Trend following - ideas that resulted from following the crowd.

Of all of the above, a random event generated the highest success rate and lowest failure rate.

Solution spotting - that is, having existing knowledge and seeking problems to apply it to - scored an 87.5% success rate and a 12.5 % failure rate.

The conclusions are, in fact, open to interpretation. It is possible to increase the probability of random events occurring but it seems the most manageable and tangible process of coming up with successful ideas (according to this theory alone) is to use established knowledge and competencies and seek out domains where it can be applied.

Satellite Television - How Does It Work?

October 17th, 2008

Ever wondered why we have satellite television? I know I have, particularly when we already have terrestrial or broadcast television available. They both seem very similar, the only difference being that with satellite you get lots more choice of channel. Of course there is cable television too, a fierce competitor for both services, but in this article I am going to stick to satellite television.

The local terrain and the curvature of the earth limit terrestrial TV signals in the area that they can server. Both terrestrial and Satellite TV use essentially the same kind of signals but by beaming the signal from above, one satellite is able to serve a wider area. This is why satellite television has become popular in remote areas where it isn’t practical to serve people with a land based antenna and certainly not economic to provide cables to those areas.

Using satellites to broadcast the TV signals solves the problem. Orbiting more than 22,000 miles above the ground they revolve around the Earth once every 24hrs, which is the same time as it takes the planet to make one complete rotation. Therefore the satellite will always stay above the same spot on the ground and it is said to be in geostationary orbit. Because the satellite is very high in the sky the transmission of the signal reaches large numbers of customers and people that are in normally remote and inaccessible places are able to take advantage. The satellites not only transmit direct back to the ground, but they are also in communication with each other, making a huge network to distribute to the largest possible numbers of people. Because the satellite is geostationary you only need to set your TV satellite dish once, in the best position to receive a signal. You shouldn’t ever have to move it again.

It is possible to set up a satellite dish on you property and receive signals from a number of different satellites, often for free. To do this you will need a dish that can be moved to point at the satellite you want to receive signals from. Some satellites of interest to amateurs aren’t even geostationary so you can only get signals from them for part of the day and your dish needs to be able to track the satellite as it moves across the sky. Most people however want to receive signals for entertainment with the least amount of fuss and so they subscribe to paid ‘Direct Broadcast Satellite’ (DBS) services like DirecTV, Dish or Sky (UK). The premium channels streamed from these satellite networks are encrypted so you need special equipment to view them and you pay for the encryption key to unlock the decoder.

Satellite TV companies make money from their networks in a variety of ways. There are three methods that are in general use today.

  • Advertising

Organisations pay the network to broadcast adverts. We all hate it but it does pay for our entertainment, or part of it at least.

  • Subscriptions

Paying a monthly fee for the right to be able to view channels that are encrypted. Your subscription generally gets you a smart card that is programmed with the decryption information and inserted into your receiver box.

  • TV Licence Fee

If you are in the UK and you have equipment that is capable of receiving TV signals then the law states you must pay for a TV licence. Note that you don’t have to use the equipment; you just have to possess it. The money from the licence fee goes to pay for the British Broadcasting Company or BBC and in return we don’t see any advertising or encryption on any BBC channels. This was a good idea in the early days of radio and TV and it helped to produce and maintain high standards of broadcasting all over the world. My personal opinion now however is that the licence fee is nothing more than yet another tax that we have to pay and I feel that the BBC should begin to stand on it’s own two feet. I doubt that it will happen anytime soon though.

If a broadcaster uses only advertising to pay for their service then you may receive and view the signals without payment or subscription. If you live in the UK you still have to pay the licence fee though.

There are five components needed to link the programme makers and the satellite television customer:

  • Distribution

The DBS provider does not create the programmes themselves, they pay for the right to be able to broadcast them via satellite television. They act as a ‘middleman’ between the ‘programming sources’ or channels and you.

  • Satellite Television Provider

Signals from the broadcast centre sources are received by the provider and transmitted to the network of satellites in orbit.

  • Satellites

The signals are received by the satellite network and retransmitted back to Earth.

  • Receiving equipment

Equipment normally provided by the DBS to allow you to receive the signal from the satellite above. A receiving dish must be professionally installed somewhere on your property.

  • Decoding and viewing

A box near your TV will take the signal received and decode your chosen channels into a form that you can watch.

I bet you never realised that there was so much involved in satellite television. It is indeed a marvel of technology and provides us with high quality up to date entertainment from all over the world. Television technology has come a very long way in such a short time.

DISH NETWORK - Do Not Order Directly From Dish Network

October 16th, 2008

If You are searching for the best deal on satellite TV from Dish Network, you would think that one would obtain the best deal by ordering directly from the main service provider…This is NOT so!

When ordering a DISH NETWORK satellite system, it is actually better for the consumer to order online from an authorized DISH NETWORK disributor as they will offer a much better deal than if you went directly through DISH NETWORK themselves.

Why is that you may ask?

Well, it seems that DISH NETWORK would prefer to use the services of authorized distributors to deal with the formalities involved with the actual order and installation process of the satellite systems.

Keep in mind that DISH NETWORK provides service to the entire USA and it would be an absolute impossibility for them to manage all of the orders and installations on their own.

Now, without going into great details as to why the DISH NETWORK distributors are able to offer such amazing deals, the fact is that the competition amongst them is so fierce that many distributors will actually set you up with a complete Satellite TV system absolutely FREE!

So before ordering a Satellite system from DISH NETWORK we suggest you save yourself a pile of money by doing your homework first.

If you want a site that has the Best FREE Deals on DISH NETWORK Take a look HERE.
