New Yorker Matthew Matros won the $1,500 buy-in Limit Hold’em Championship at the World Series of Poker to claim $189,870 and a WSOP gold bracelet. The Brooklyn-based poker pro has had a decade-long commitment to poker and the study of game theory. It was great to see the growth of a player and the payoff that dedication can bring in this sport where others swing high and low often.

Matros grew up on Long Island in West Hampton. N.Y. He earned a degree in mathematics at Yale University and received a Masters Degree in fine arts from Sarah Lawrence University. He is the author of The Making of a Poker Player, which chronicles his early years transitioning from student/employee into a full-time poker pro. Matros hopes to finish work on a novel (not about poker) within the next year. It’s definitely on my Amazon wish list and I hope to learn from it and follow in his footsteps.

Matros worked as a software engineer before deciding to pursue a poker career. He was a dedicated poker player long before the poker boom, playing seriously since 1999 and relying on poker for the majority of his income since 2002. Adjustment Heads up

June 2nd, 2010

If you’ve been following us in the past, you know that we’ve covered heads-up poker play. You should already know you’ll be opening a wider range of poker hands on the button, almost ridiculously wide. Well, over my last session of 100 sit-n-go tournaments, I’ve noticed that there is a distinct difference in the SnG opponents then you will find in the cash game opponents. Apparently, to some, it is easier to piss away their chips if it’s not real money in front of them. As such, I’ve found that SnGs heads up poker are a lot easier to beat. Not having the bankroll to really make such a foolish move, I decided to go ahead and play in a 100 dollar SnG. Let me tell you about the opponent I faced (and this guy is at every stake level). I call him the disrespecter. Most competent poker players will know that a lot of hands are being raised on the button in HU No Limit. This guy knew this, but he never gave ANY of the raises any respect. Now, it’s hard to continue after your fourth button raise and you get grossly overbet by a donk 3bet. So here’s the adjustment to make against this player. Start calling your raising hands on the button more frequently. When you do this, you get him to make his raise; and, since you’re in position, you can simply cold call, let him check to you when he misses, and then donk into his preflop raise and regain pot control. At first I thought that maybe if you four bet him he would give up and let you take the pot, but alas, this didn’t work either. If you’re not a fan of just calling on the button against a manic player like this, make your raises smaller instead of 3bbs, make it just two, then again you can cold call. The one thing you want to avoid in HU SnGs is getting into a betting war with a marginal hand, and making the end decision come down to a coinflip when you don’t know if you’re favored or not. Now if you have AA KK or QQ, then by all means just skip the standard four-bet, and make your fourbet an all in shove. If your high pocket pair gets cracked, well. That’s variance folks.

Five Reasons to Raise

March 30th, 2010

Taking an aggressive stance in poker is often the way to win the hand. By playing a selectively aggressive game you are most likely to force other players to fold and to haul in uncontested pots.

Playing a selectively aggressive game does not mean just raising without reason or forethought. You must look for opportunities when a raise can achieve the objective of forcing folds behind you.

The best opportunities for raising in online poker are:

* From early position with a big pocket pair - Jacks or better. This should cause those with raggy or marginal hands to fold and will narrow the field of contenders that you have to beat.

* When you are in late position with a strong hand and there has only been limping into the pot ahead of you. Late position raises will most often win the pot outright or at least cause most limpers to fold pre-flop.

* If you know the online poker players to your left are tight rocks who fold everything but premium cards.

* If there are calling stations or maniacs betting behind you who rarely fold to any bet. By observing the previous actions of others, you should be able to identify those players who are prone to calling. With a big hand, you can raise the maniacs who call or re-raise with anything.

* A scare card appears on the board - a third card to a suit or a straight. A raise here will either shut down the hand or give you credible information about another player’s hand if called.

Hand Analysis: 8-Queen

February 12th, 2010

Queen eight gets the nickname ‘Kuwait,’ for its similarity in sound to the country. It’s another one of those big + little hands that you can’t really do much of anything with, unless your table is just really letting you abuse them. Hands made up of one big poker card and one medium or little card just don’t have much value in the game of poker online, as there are very few flop that you could hope for (two pair, maybe, or trips or a full house, though even these can get you into trouble against a bigger hand). Anytime I see a player with this kind of big little online poker hand showing down to the river with it, I make a little checkmark beside their name, or in my mind. They are going to be the ones I target to be playing weaker hands when I am playing strong ones, and ready to give me their chips when I am ready for them to. Flirting too much with middling hands might win you random pots, but in the long run it’s just going to set you up for a spill. I’d like to be the one there when it happens, as it’s fun to eat dinner off of somebody else’s ‘queen eight’ money.

Contaminated Cards

February 3rd, 2010

poker players routinely calculate outs and odds to figure out the probability of a winning casino online hand. A player with an open-ended straight draw has 8 “outs” or cards that will complete that straight. Someone drawing to a flush with four to the suit has 9 outs since there are 13 cards in every suit. Sometimes though the outs don’t actually bring a win, but can hurt a player counting on hitting one of these outs. They overlook the fact that one or more of their presumed outs could hit an opponent’s hand even better. For instance, you are holding 10 J , with K Q 5 on board so, you have a draw to an open-ended straight with 8 outs. The turn is a blank, but does put two hearts on board. Now another player could be on a flush draw, so basically two of your outs, the 9 and Ace of hearts are contaminated since if either of these materialize, your straight could be smashed by a flush. Those outs are no longer available to you so your pot odds on the draw are less favorable. Relying on pot outs is sound poker online playing. However always be alert to the fact that some of your outs can be voided as the board texture changes.

Some Words on Age

January 19th, 2010

As online poker becomes increasing televised, it may seem that all of the poker players are young and glamorous. The televised broadcasts of online poker tend to focus on the players that will attract the largest viewing audience, and this can mean the players with the greatest skill or the players that are the most cameras ready. Before you start thinking that you will need to abandon you poker game to the new batch of fresh faced players, take a moment to consider the statistics.

Only 26.9% of poker players are between the ages of 26-35. While there are a very few aberrations that make their poker names younger than 25, these statistics show that the bulk of players are above the age of 35. This means that you definitely have good company at the table along with your experience and familiarity with the game.

Age actually can have a critical impact on the way that you play poker. While it borders on a cliché, the older a man is, the more time that they have had to learn how to control their emotions. Add on top of this a longer time spending poker and more ready cash, and you have a winning combination that is sure to make you walk away a winner even if the other player is half your age.
