A winning smile costs nothing
Think back over the last week or so and see if you can remember anyone giving you the time of day in the street, a simple ‘good morning’ or a cheery smile from a beautiful stranger as you go about your daily routine. It didn’t happen did it? Why? Because you’ve got a face like a bag of spanners, you’re walking around as miserable as sin and you’re giving off bad vibes. In short your whole lousy operation stinks. So how do we turn this around? Next time you have a new client down to the office for a meeting, go up to them and plant a big sloppy kiss on their forehead. You never know they might turn around and sign that big 5 figure sum graphic design contract.

It’s not all about the money
Sometimes, the old adage ‘a dog is for life - not just for christmas’ rings chillingly true. If you’ve ever considered or contemplated suicide based on the fact your clients have been leaving in droves and the only regular graphic design job you’ve secured in the last 3 months is a flyer design for ‘disco Stu’s’ 70’s night down at the church hall - on a wednesday night, then it’s high time you looked at yourself square in the mirror and worked out why. Bad breath? Crooked teeth? Inability to stop yourself scratching your privates in public? No, the real reason your clients are leaving you high and dry is because you’re too mean. Throw in a few freebies, offer to cook your client a lovely lasagna dinner for two, buy them a kinder surprise. Anything to curry favour that isn’t going to break the bank is worth its weight in gold. And that’s a fact, fact fans!

Dress to impress
Anyone who was anyone in the eighties will remember ‘power dressing’. 6 inch stiletto heels, shoulder pads set to stun and low cut tops with peep hole bras. By and large businessmen today are reluctant to go back to cross dressing in order to win that all important contract and prefer to go along the tried and tested route of wearing dull grey slacks and loafers. Remember Elton John didn’t get where he is today by dressing like the boy next door.

Brainstorm until you haemorrage
If you can’t work out why you’re losing money hand over fist and your client base has dried up to a thin wafer like crust, get your team involved and crack some skulls! Sometimes the best people to tell you where you’re going wrong are your terrified and hate filled staff. Jim over in scanning has been sat there feeding off his resentment for not fulfilling his life for the last 10 years. Use him - he’s got a brain up there hasn’t he? Margaret the lady who comes by the office to sell sandwiches - again, could she be put to better use sat in the spare room paid to think up a marketing strategy to win over your rivals clients? If not think and think again until it hurts. Remember its your ass on the line here. Above all remember ’skull cracking’ is fun and if a few eggs get broken in the process, hey that’s life in the fast lane buddy.

Delegate, don’t vegetate
We’ve all done it at some stage. Tried to cope when our world is falling apart, attempting to juggle the accounts, the graphic design work you have in and trying to bone up on web design for beginners in order to make ends meat. Athetoid cerebral palsy is one of three types of cerebral palsy, and affects between ten and twenty percent of patients. This form of cerebral palsy is caused by damage to parts of the brain called the cerebellum or basal ganglia. These parts of the brain help maintain coordinated and smooth movements and overall body posture. People with athetoid cerebral palsy demonstrate uncontrollable, involuntary, slow, writhing movements of the limbs, and sometimes of the face or tongue. These movements tend to become worse during periods of stress, and disappear during sleep.

Patients may be unable to walk or stand because of poor muscle tone, and may also have difficulty grasping and holding on to objects. Their inability to coordinate movements may also make them unable to feed themselves and perform other activities of daily living. When the face and tongue are involved, patients with athetoid cerebral palsy may grimace, drool or thrust their tongues out. Tongue involvement may make them unable to swallow properly or to speak normally, a condition called dysatrhria.

Patients with athetoid cerebral palsy can be prescribed a group of drugs called anticholinergics to reduce abnormal movements. Such drugs block the action of acetylcholine, a compound in the body that acts on nerve cells to trigger muscle contraction. Some commonly prescribed anticholinergic drugs are trihexyphenidyl, benztropine and procyclidine. Speech therapy plays an important role in managing athetoid cerebral palsy, and can help normalize swallowing movements and reduce slurred speech. Nowadays, special computers and voice synthesizers are available to make speech clearer.

Athetoid cerebral palsy does not improve or become worse with age, but it is distressing for the large number of people with normal intelligence who have this condition. However, normal mental ability often motivates patients to work harder to reduce movement and speech deficits through therapy and to lead productive lives.

Lisbon’s population is around 600,000 in the city itself. Two million people live in the area around Lisbon, including both sides of the Tejo River. The area enjoys short winters and long summers with the maximum temperature said to not be over 84 degrees Fahrenheit. December through March is the rainy season when mostly drizzle or light showers take place.

Lisbon and its surrounding area provide visitors with a diverse array of encounters. There are many sandy beaches available in the area. The main maritime entrance into the city is the Praca do Comercio. It was built over the ruins of a 400-year-old palace. Other curious historical points of interest around the city include Saint George Castle, the Monastery of Jeronimos, and the Tower of Belem.

Saint George Castle is located on the highest hill in Lisbon. It was an ancient citadel that the Moors conquered in 1147. The castle actually dates back to the 5th century, A.D. Vistas from the castle are breathtaking. Locals as well as tourists enjoy the tranquility and spectacular views of the city and the riverbank area.

The Monastery of Jeronimos was built in 1498 as a monument to the15th century Portuguese navigator Vasco de Gama. Many a sailor would pray in its chapel before heading out to sea. The monastery is adorned with stone statues of sea monsters, various maritime symbols, and brilliantly colored tiles.

The Tower of Belem, built in 1521, rises above a series of forts that once protected the riverbank area. Presently, two bridges span the Tejo River. The 25th of April Bridge built in 1966 and the Vasco de Gama Bridge built in 1998. Modern day Lisboetas, people of Lisbon, are not worried about fortifying their city instead mobility is the greater need.

As it emerges as a major city in the European Union, Lisbon continues to celebrate its extensive past and optimistically anticipates its destiny to come.

Something I’ve seen over and over is that many of my clients originally believed that marketing and lead generation is supposed to bring “as many people through the door” as possible. It isn’t. It is about “getting the most qualified people through the door.”

I’ve developed a rule of thumb in my business consulting that has helped me identify one of the big problems my clients frequently have. The rule goes this way:

If there are

• two different groups responsible for lead generation and sales, and
  • if marketing success (advertising, lead generation) seems extraordinarily high,
  • while the sales close ratio is way down (maybe 1 in 10)
    then the chances are that the marketing and lead generation efforts are not qualifying the leads.

  Then the target has been to get the most people through the door instead of the most qualified people.

One of my sales trainees ended up with an extremely high cold calling response rate. It was nearly 90% of every live person she could reach. She was convincing nearly everyone she could actually talk to to explore the next steps.

She had convinced one of the other companies in the class to hire her to do their telemarketing. The result of her telemarketing was that she was bringing in a flood of leads to their sales department. The problem was that the sales department was not able to close many of these leads.

She could generate lots of leads. She could generate a lot of interest but she had failed to qualify these people, to make sure that they could and would be able to buy.

On one hand it proved that what we had been doing in the sales training worked as she was able to generate so much interest. On the other, she was abusing the influencing skills she had developed in our class, and wasn’t qualifying the people before passing the lead on to sales.

Let me give you another rule of thumb I use. The sales process usually is more labor intensive than the marketing and lead generation process. If the leads aren’t being qualified in the marketing step then a lot of time is wasted in the sales process talking to unqualified people. The sales response rates will drop and not really indicate the true sales success.

If a sales person is talking to a qualified prospect his sales close ratio should be in the 40-50%, or even higher, range. However, if he is fed leads that aren’t qualified, he is having to qualify leads that should have been qualified by the marketing and lead generation process and taking a lot of valuable sales time. Now his sales success will go through the floor.

So, if you see a high marketing, lead generation success and low sales success look into the fact that they might be receiving unqualified leads as a potential cause before accusing sales of being failures or before providing training to the sales department.

If, as is frequently the case, the sales department is also responsible for generating their own leads, I’ve frequently seen sales people that are excellent at lead generation but couldn’t close a deal if their job depended on it, and it does. I’ve also seen excellent closers that couldn’t find a lead with both hands. Evaluate your sales team by assessing these two separate skills. They are, indeed, two separate skills and frequently not at the same skill level in your sales people.
